Coral

Sciacca coral has unique characteristics that distinguish itself from all other corals in the world due to its color, which varies from intense orange to salmon, to pale pink characterized by brownish spots that testify its volcanic origins and the very high temperatures reached. Raw Sciacca coral, organic material that grew on the appendices of the underwater volcano of Ferdinandea Island (also called the island that does not exist), appeared opaque when freshly caught, but once cleaned and carefully washed it has a vitreous-porcelain sheen. In 1875, 14 000 tons of coral were collected, but starting from the 20th century, regulations for the protection of marine resources were introduced to regulate coral fishing, thus avoiding its excessive exploitation and guaranteeing the sustainability of the species. This is what makes Sciacca coral unique in the world and valuable. Traditionally considered a lucky charm, coral also has a symbolic value linked to beauty, protection and good luck.
